If you want to know what a signature performance looks like, look no further than Sterling Heights Stevenson senior Olivia Buford, who was named Swimmer of the Meet at the Macomb County Championships and gave the field nothing to argue about. She set meet and Macomb L'Anse Creuse North pool records in the 50-yard freestyle with a 23.95, then turned around and won the 100 butterfly in 58.75 — by more than five seconds. That is not winning a race; that is clearing the room. The numbers carry the rest of the story: her 50 ranks fifth on the state's top times list this season, her butterfly sits 17th, and she's a two-time MHSAA Finals racer who finished 10th in the 50 a year ago in Lower Peninsula Division 1. She's qualified again this fall in both, and she sits about a second off a Finals cut in the 100 backstroke. Off the blocks, Buford is weighing where she'll swim in college while chasing a pre-medical degree and the dream of becoming a doctor. A champion in the water and a future in the lab — we'll be rooting the whole way.
