Coach Mackey Hangs 'Em Up After 38 Years and 500-Plus Wins at Gogebic!

What a career we get to celebrate, as Dennis Mackey has retired in April after 38 years on the sidelines at Gogebic Community College, and folks, that is a lifetime of hoops! He went 256-227 with the women and 277-263 with the men, stacking up more than 500 wins across 19 years with each squad! Mackey is a true son of the U.P., graduating from Ewen-Trout Creek in 1981 as a 1,000-point scorer and Ed Helakoski Award winner in the Porcupine Mountain Conference! Six years into his men's tenure he led the Samsons to the program's first national tournament, and they clawed back Region 13 titles in 2011 and 2013! And what an honor, as GCC named the floor 'Coach Mackey Court' in the Lindquist Center while he was still coaching, on a random Tuesday game night in November! His creed lives on — 'Once a Samson, Always a Samson' — and with Adam and Jesse Mackey now coaching at Ironwood, the family torch burns bright!
