Friday night gave us the kind of high school football that keeps us up past our bedtimes, and our Detroit King squad delivered — outlasting Orchard Lake St. Mary's in a triple-overtime thriller that had everything a fan could ask for out at Orchard Lake. Three overtimes. Let that sit for a second. This was a regular season meeting, but nobody told these two teams that, and King found a way to hang on when the lights burned longest. As Keith Dunlap of the Detroit News laid it out, this one belonged on the marquee. Here's the wrinkle that keeps our eyes on the road ahead: come playoff time, King and St. Mary's will land in separate Divisions, so a rematch on the biggest stage isn't in the cards. That only makes a Week 2 slugfest like this one sweeter — sometimes the best games are the ones the bracket can't give you back.
