History came to Midland this week, and it belongs to us in Jackson: Lumen Christi hauled in the hardware with 24 points to claim its first MHSAA Finals boys tennis championship, holding off Ludington and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, who tied for second at 20. Six of our contenders reached the semifinals out of eight flights — the kind of depth titles are built on. What makes it sweeter is the backstory, with most of these athletes also playing hockey and their own courts being redone, forcing the squad to practice over at Spring Arbor University and Jackson High School. They found a way regardless. Elsewhere in the Lower Peninsula Division 4 Finals, the usual powers held serve: Detroit Country Day edged Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 34-33, flipping the exact same score that cost them the title a year ago. Lansing Catholic senior Noah West took the No. 1 singles crown 6-2, 6-2 over Mateus Pimentel — twenty-five years after his uncle Kevin Borzenski won the same title and went on to Pepperdine. Full circle.
