Pioneer Blanks Dexter 2-0 to Claim the First-Ever MHSAA Field Hockey Crown!

What a day for our Ann Arbor Pioneer field hockey program. The No. 1 overall seed took down Southeastern Conference rival Dexter 2-0 at Tom Holzer Field in Northville on Saturday to capture the first-ever MHSAA-sponsored state championship — Pioneer's 31st overall, and the first since the sport moved under MHSAA sponsorship in the program's 46th year. Zoe Shuchman, a junior, got us on the board with 4:03 left in the first quarter, and senior Maggie Lamb doubled the lead off a Dexter turnover with 2:47 to play in the third — her 10th goal of the season. And the headline of the whole run: freshman goalie Mara Boullion did not surrender a single goal across the entire tournament, stopping all seven shots Saturday while Dexter dug for chance after chance. This was no cakewalk. Dexter, 15-4-4 and making its fourth-straight title game appearance, outshot us 9-7 and earned 10 penalty corner opportunities. Pioneer answered every one. Twenty-seven seasons in, coach Jane Nixon has her group on top again.
