What a night for our Knights at Secchia Stadium on Saturday, as Walled Lake Northern claimed the Division 1 Softball Final over Grand Haven 2-1 for the first Finals championship in program history — the first Finals team title in ANY sport the school has ever won! Senior ace Lyla Turmell was untouchable, allowing just one hit — a first-inning single by Ryley Jeltema — while walking three and striking out nine, and she struck out the side in the top of the seventh to slam the door! Turmell even set the tone with a home run in the first inning to give Northern a 1-0 lead, and she worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth like a champ! Then junior Shayla Byrnes broke the 1-1 tie with a home run in the bottom of the sixth — a fly ball down the left field line that banged right off the foul pole! The Knights finished a dazzling 39-3, while John Hall's battling Grand Haven squad closed at 36-5-1 in their first title-game appearance! Turmell heads to Toledo to study nursing next, and she's our MHSAA Performance of the Week!
