What a night up at the Rogers Centre, as the battling Tigers found a way past the Blue Jays 6-5 in front of 42,867 to take Game 1 of the series. It came down to the ninth, when Zach McKinstry scored the winning run on a missed-catch error — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. fielded a dribbler and threw to first, and Louis Varland, who otherwise had a monster 5-for-6 night, couldn't handle it. José Soriano had Detroit stymied early, carrying a perfect game through five, but the seventh belonged to Detroit: four runs on five hits, opened by a Dillon Dingler RBI single, capped by Max Clark's two-run double and a Spencer Torkelson RBI double. Toronto answered with Kazuma Okamoto's three-run shot — his 33rd, a new single-season home run record for right-handed hitters from Japan — but Brett Callahan's RBI single knotted it in the eighth. Tyler Kinley worked a hitless eighth and Kenley Jansen slammed the door for his 20th save. Now riding a five-game win streak, Detroit sends Drew Anderson (4-6, 3.80) to the hill for Game 2 on Tuesday night first pitch at 7:07pm.
