Boyd's Boot and a Late Answer: Spartans Storm Back to Down Toledo 30-20 in Fitzgerald's Opening Night!

Friday night football is back in East Lansing, and 72,083 of us packed Spartan Stadium to watch our Spartans open the Pat Fitzgerald era with a 30-20 win over Toledo. First game, first win for our new head man, and it came the hard way. We raced out to a 19-7 halftime lead behind graduate kicker Liam Boyd, a Charlotte transfer who was automatic, connecting on five field goals — 32, 42, 48, 35, and finally a career-best 51-yarder with 1:55 left. But Toledo clawed back, and when Connor Walendzak broke off a 71-yard run, the Rockets suddenly led 20-19 with 13:47 to play. That's when Alessio Milivojevic answered, hitting Rodney Bullard Jr. for a 5-yard score and the two-point conversion to put us back on top for good. Milivojevic went 26-of-34 for 247 yards, Cam Edwards ground out 98 yards on 27 carries, and Kenny Soares Jr. grabbed a pick in his first game as a Spartan. Next up: we host Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
